Module Description:

This module introduces students to modern theories of translation and how these can be applied to the practice of translation as an activity. It focuses on a range of text types in a variety of situations, building on and going beyond the translation situation encountered in core languages modules.

Translation is approached as a decision-making activity, and students learn how to decide and justify their decisions with terminology from the field.

 Module Aims:

In this course, students will develop and refine a practical translation skill set within the scientific domains. In addition, students will gain familiarity with textual conventions that govern source and target texts within these domains. Students will also be able to analyse texts for register, style, tone and content to determine the most appropriate process to achieve the highest quality of translation.

This course is dedicated to second year Master (Linguistics) students as part of their pragmatics module.

The course consists of two parts. The first part is devoted to contrastive analysis which introduces students to (i) the concept of contrastive analysis, (ii) a historical overview on contrastive analysis and (iii) the fundamental principles for a contrastive analysis, (iv) the steps of contrastive analysis, and (v) the strengths and weaknesses of contrastive analysis and finally (vi) the implication of contrastive analysis.
The second part of this course concerns the error analysis within which the concept of error analysis is set forth. Then, an overview of its theoretical foundations, assumptions and objectives is offerd. To make the students proceed towards the practical side of error analysis, the major steps of conducting it are hlighted and supported with concrete examples. Finally, this part ends up with some criricisms of error analysis.
