  • Course description and objectives

This course explores the ways in which language varies according to several factors such as, subject area, social setting, communicative purpose and the social roles and identities of those involved. It looks at how different types of speech and writing work, such as casual conversation, interviews and interrogations, public speaking, emailing and mobile phone texting, and news stories, to name a few. Students will learn about the nature of meaning, how we normally express more than we actually say or write, the need of courtesy in verbal communication, how most forms of communication require cooperation, and what makes texts cohesive and intelligible.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the area of Text and Discourse Analysis. Issues explored include those of talk and text organisation, of the interface between discourse and grammar and of social relationships, include power relationships, in discourse.
