This course is broadly named ‘English for Specific Purposes’, which can be abbreviated as such: ‘ESP’. It is a subset of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) or English as a Second Language (ESL). “Why do I have to learn ESP as a mathematics students?”, first-year students at the National Higher School of Mathematics (NHSM) might wonder. The answer is that this course is specifically designed to equip first-year students, or the so-called ‘freshers’, with a variety of skills they need in their academic journey at the National Higher School of Mathematics (NHSM) and beyond.
The following three chapter belong to a unit called: "Study skills for university students". The first chapter paves the way for the other two chapters. It initiates with a definition of ‘study skills’, their importance, and sheds light on the academic obstacles commonly faced by students who do not embrace study skills.
The second chapter helps students identify the different types of learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and familiarize them with Gardner's multiple intelligences (e.g., linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial), as well as assist students to apply their knowledge of learning styles and multiple intelligences to discover their own learning preferences and design their study plan.
Last, the third chapter lists common barriers to academic success, identifies strategies to overcome learning obstacles., and differentiates between having a fixed vs. a growth mindset in learning.
Let us embark on this journey together!
