This course will introduce students to translation generally in order to develop their understanding of translation in a wider context and to give them the necessary notions to improve their translation practice later on

. students will be able to use context and co-text  and look at various meanings that words can bear.

The course consists of the following four lectures:

Lecture 1 - Translation definition
The first lecture introduces  to the field of translation in general: definitions, key terms …

lecture 2 – concepts relating to translation: Polysemy vs. Monosemy
This lecture focuses on the fact that one word can bear more than one meaning and how paying attention to this is important while translating.

lecture 3 - concepts relating to translation: Context vs.Co-text
This lecture focuses on the role of the vertical relationship between a word and the circumstances of its enunciating in a hand and the relationship between words put together in the other hand, in defining meanings

In the final lecture, students will explore the Vinay and Darbelnet’s 07 techniques of translation..
