The relational data model was first introduced by Ted Codd of IBM Research in 1970 in a paper* titled, A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks, and it attracted immediate attention due to its simplicity and mathematical foundation. One of the major advantage of the relational model is its uniformity. All data is viewed as stored in tables, with each row in the table having the same format. The model uses the concept of a mathematical relation and has its theoretical basis in set theory and first-order predicate logic.
This section presents the main concepts of the model, and relational algebra and relational calculus which are associated with the relational model.
