American ethnic literature refers to the writings of the groups that have been traditionally marginalized or disenfranchised in American society-- African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, and Asian Pacific Americans. It is a literature that authentically reflects non-Western cultures, with characters and content other than those of mainstream society.

COURSE Objectives:
Expand Literary Horizons: Expose students to a broad spectrum of American literature, including voices traditionally marginalized in the literary canon. This exposure aims to broaden students’ understanding of American literature and its diverse expressions.
Cultivate Critical Thinking: Cultivate critical thinking and analytical skills through the examination of ethnic literatures, focusing on themes of identity, displacement, and cultural integration. Students will learn to question and deconstruct dominant narratives and to appreciate the multiplicity of perspectives.
Understand Historical Contexts: Develop an understanding of the historical and sociopolitical contexts that shape ethnic literary production and its reception in mainstream culture. This contextual knowledge will enable students to appreciate the depth and significance of the literary works they study.
Promote Cultural Awareness: Promote cultural awareness and sensitivity by exploring the lived experiences and narratives of diverse ethnic communities in America. This awareness is crucial in fostering empathy and understanding in a multicultural society.
Encourage Comparative Analysis: Encourage comparative analysis of literary works, enabling students to draw parallels between different ethnic narratives and broader American literary traditions. Comparative analysis will help students recognize the interconnectedness of different cultural experiences and the shared themes that emerge across ethnic literatures.
Develop Research Skills: Enhance students' research skills, particularly in sourcing and critically engaging with secondary literature related to ethnic studies and literary criticism. This will prepare students for advanced academic work and enable them to contribute meaningfully to scholarly discussions.
