      Dear students
      This handout is designed for first-year university students and comprises a series of lessons and solved problems. It is in accordance with the Ministry's conformance model of the LMD "Academic /License" formation offer. After studying this scale, the student is able to understand and assimilate the basic concepts of the mechanics of the material point and use these concepts in analyzing other physical phenomena, as well as acquiring intellectual abilities that allow him to link what he learned in this scale to other academic horizons as they progress into the future.
      At the end of this course, the student will have to acquire basic knowledge of point mechanics.

      A swimmer is crossing a river with a width of L = 1 km, moving from one bank to the other perpendicular to the current at a constant velocity v = 4 km/h. The current velocity is = 2 km/h.

      -          What do these two velocities represent?, Write their analytical expressions in the Cartesian coordinate system (xoy).

      -          Calculate the angle at which the swimmer deviates.

      -          Determine the swimmer's trajectory, velocity, and the time required to reach the opposite bank.

      -       If the swimmer intends to reach a point directly opposite the starting bank, what should be the initial direction? Calculate the time needed to reach the opposite bank under these conditions.
